FA Member News: 2/8/2017
March 1, 2017
Dear FA members,
As you’re no doubt aware, the IEA/NEA is run democratically, and we have the right to send representatives to various meetings that determine association policy.
We are looking for nominees for three sets of upcoming elections.
The first is an opening for our local delegate to the NEA Representative Assembly–the national assembly for the NEA, which meets June 30 – July 5 in Boston this year. We are entitled to one delegate at this meeting thanks to our number of members–so this would be a local election (assuming we get multiple nominees).
Our region (Region 2) is looking for a Chair, Vice Chair, and Ethnic Minority Representative. The Region Chair, who is elected by all the IEA members in the Region, is a member of the IEA Board of Directors. This board elects the executive committee of the IEA. The Region Chair is also a member of the IEA-Representative Assembly and of the NEA-Representative Assembly. Any IEA member is eligible to run for these posts.
Then there are statewide posts: all IEA members are eligible to run to be the State Delegate to the NEA Representative Assembly, or to be a member of the IEA Higher Education Council.
I frankly find the medley of IEA and NEA councils and assemblies rather confusing, but they do important work, and we have had SIU faculty serve in leadership positions in the IEA before. If you are interested in getting more information on any of these offices, please contact Aldo Migone at aldino1981@yahoo.com by February 15.
Thank you for being a member of the FA, and for considering further participation in the IEA/NEA.
In solidarity,
Dave Johnson
President, SIUC-FA
