December 2018 Voting Info

In December we will be voting on two issues, a tentative agreement with the administration about salaries, and representatives for the IEA Regional Assembly.

We will hold a General Membership Meeting from 5:00 to 6:00 pm on Tuesday, December 4th in Lawson 131. The primary agenda item will be a tentative agreement with the administration about salaries.

Voting on the tentative agreement and about IEA representatives will take place on December 4 and 5. Members will have two opportunities for in-person voting:

  • At the General Membership Meeting from 5:00 to 6:00 pm on Tuesday, December 4th in Lawson 131.
  • At a table in the SIU Student Center, from 10:00-2:00 pm on Wednesday, December 5th.

Any member wishing to vote by absentee ballot should contact Anne Fletcher (beaselybe@earthlink.com) by 4:30 on Tuesday, November 27. She will respond with instructions for absentee balloting (which requires a double envelope system to safeguard the vote). Absentee ballots must be received by December 5.

1. Tentative agreement

Language for a tentative agreement has now been finalized and signed, and is ready for review by members. As part of this agreement, the FA would agree to extend the current contract until June 30, 2019. Votes will be thus to ratify the entire contract, with the only substantive changes being to salaries and to its end date (from June 2018 to June 2019). If members choose to ratify, bargaining on a new contract would start this spring rather than happening now.

2. IEA Regional Assembly (RA) Representatives

FA members can vote on the election of representatives to the IEA Regional Assembly, to be held on April 11-13, 2019, at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Rosemont. The FA is guaranteed one slot at the assembly, and eligible for a second; there is also an election for a minority delegate.

Randy Hughes has agreed to stand as a write-in candidate for one of the positions. It is too late for nominations to be included as a written candidate on the ballot, but we encourage any other members interested in standing as write-in candidates to get in touch so that we can publicize your candidacy.

The IEA RA will vote on the IEA budget and dues this year, and representatives will also have the opportunity to grill IPACE (the IEA political arm) on their role in candidate endorsements. This is an opportunity to make our voice heard by the IEA, so members with concerns about IEA policies may be particularly interested in running for these seats.
