COVID-19 Recommendations

Dear colleagues,

The attached document shares some FA recommendations for the COVID-19 crisis.

We are all scrambling to react to this crisis. The recommendations we pass on are just that, our best ideas for how to handle this crisis now. The way things are going, many of them may be overtaken by events in the next day or two.

I originally intended to send these recommendations solely to the administration, because I do not want this to be viewed as a critique of what they’ve done so far. You will notice that I have cc’d campus leaders on this message. They too are scrambling. But as many of the recommendations are relevant for faculty, including for meetings going on today, I’m releasing it to everyone at once.

I will not be spouting off in the press or otherwise be critical of the administration, until and unless they fail to take necessary measures in a reasonable timeframe. And it is certainly my hope and expectation that they will do so. This is a time when the unions can strive to work together with management, as indeed is happening at the state level, where I have been impressed by the inclusive leadership of our governor. This is well and truly a case where are all in this together, and the more we work together, the better off we will all be.

If you have concerns or questions not addressed by these recommendations, do send them to me and our IEA Uniserv Director, Aldo Mignone (who is cc’d above). We will do our best to address them.

In solidarity,

Dave Johnson
